This line of research covers a wide range of objects and fields of investigation and is structured from an interdisciplinary perspective that has founded Social Sciences in contemporary times. From this perspective, cultural studies stand out, in which symbolic aspects and imagery, in their various manifestations and practices, are considered fundamental categories for understanding life in society and history itself.
This line of research includes studies on various symbolic constructions, such as: gender relations, ethnic identities, conflict and violence, popular culture, literature and art, regional and national identities, among others.
In the field of identities, we seek to understand the new ways of constructing political subjects in the contemporary world. To this end, we consider the processes of rupture with the traditional forms that until then stabilized identities: class, nation, race. In this sense, it is assumed that the construction of identity results from a situational, hybrid, conflictive, dynamic and unstable process.
The field of gender studies brings together research guided by theoretical perspectives of understanding the social construction of sexual differences and their consequences for the positioning of men and women in different spheres of social relations. In this way, gender is considered a social marker for social science analyses. The Education theme aims to reflect on the theoretical contribution of Social Sciences, focusing on the production of classic and contemporary sociological knowledge for the study and understanding of culture and the process of building citizenship.
The historicity of Sociology teaching, teaching materials, teacher training, the valorization of school and education as an object of sociological research are issues of specific interest in this area. In the field of sociability, we seek to understand the specific aspects of contemporary sociability, verify the existence of new forms of expression and, for this, it is important to recover diagnoses about the sociability characteristic of modernity, recover scenarios, perceive continuities and discontinuities.
