The number of scholarships may vary each year according to the announcements published by the funding agencies: CAPES, FAPEMIG, and CNPq. Currently, the Master's Program in Social Sciences has five scholarship programs, which are:
Social Demand Program – DS / CAPES:
This program aims to promote the training of highly qualified human resources by granting scholarships to stricto sensu postgraduate programs (master’s and doctorate). The scholarships are awarded to institutions with public legal status and free education, evaluated by CAPES with a score equal to or greater than three. The scholarships are managed by the institutions and postgraduate programs, which are responsible for the selection and monitoring of scholarship holders, according to CAPES guidelines.
Scholarship Requirements:
Art. 9. To be eligible for a scholarship, the graduate student must:
I - Dedicate full time to the activities of the postgraduate program;
II - If employed, be released from professional activities and without receiving a salary; (Revoked by Ordinance No. 133, of July 10, 2023)
III - Demonstrate satisfactory academic performance, in accordance with the regulations established by the institution offering the program;
IV - Have no employment relationship with the institution offering the postgraduate program; (Revoked by Ordinance No. 133, of July 10, 2023)
V - Undertake a teaching internship as established in Art. 18 of this regulation;
VI - Not be enrolled in a medical residency program;
VII - If a public servant, only those with permanent status may be eligible for master's and doctoral scholarships, as provided in Art. 318 of Law No. 11,907, of February 2, 2009;
VIII - Public servants who receive master's and doctoral scholarships must return to their professional duties for a period equal to the leave granted (§ 4, Art. 96-A, added by Art. 318 of Law No. 11,907, of February 2, 2009, which amended Law No. 8,112, of December 11, 1990); (Revoked by Ordinance No. 133, of July 10, 2023)
IX - Be classified in the selection process specifically conducted by the Higher Education Institution offering the program;
X - Reside in the city where the course is conducted; (Revoked by Ordinance No. 79, of April 28, 2023)
XI - Not receive a scholarship in conjunction with any other financial aid or scholarship from another CAPES program, a public, national or international funding agency, or a public or private company, except in the following cases:
a) A graduate student may be admitted as a master's or doctoral scholarship holder if they receive a gross income lower than the scholarship amount of the respective modality, derived from a functional relationship with the public basic education network or in the field of public health, provided they are fully released from professional duties and, in the latter case, are enrolled in postgraduate studies in the relevant field;
b) CAPES scholarship holders enrolled in postgraduate programs in the country who are selected to work as substitute professors at public higher education institutions, with the proper consent of their advisor and authorization from the CAPES/DS Scholarship Committee of the postgraduate program, will retain their scholarships. However, those already working as substitute professors will not be eligible for the Social Demand Program scholarships;
c) As established by Joint Ordinance No. 1 CAPES/CNPq, of December 12, 2007, CAPES scholarship holders enrolled in postgraduate programs in Brazil may receive a scholarship from the Open University of Brazil (UAB) when working as tutors. For other UAB agents, scholarship accumulation is not permitted. (Revoked by Ordinance No. 133, of July 10, 2023)
Sole Paragraph. Failure by the Higher Education Institution to comply with the requirements of this article will result in the immediate suspension of transfers and the reimbursement to CAPES of misused funds, as well as the withdrawal of improperly used scholarships.
Postgraduate Support Program – PAPG / FAPEMIG:
This program aims to encourage the training and qualification of researchers in specific fields of knowledge, enabling their continuity in postgraduate programs through the granting of master's and doctoral scholarships, as well as research funding to Scientific and Technological Institutions (ICTs) based in Minas Gerais that offer stricto sensu postgraduate courses evaluated by CAPES with a score of three or higher.
Scholarship Requirements:
a) Be regularly enrolled in the Postgraduate Program;
b) Reside in the State of Minas Gerais;
c) Not receive multiple scholarships;
d) Comply with Deliberation No. 84 of the FAPEMIG Board of Trustees, of August 11, 2015;
e) Have no employment relationship.
Postgraduate Development Program (PDPG):
The Postgraduate Development Program (PDPG) – Strategic Postdoctoral Fellowship focuses on improving the National Postgraduate System (SNPG) by consolidating "Emerging" and "Developing" Postgraduate Programs (PPGs). The program aims to contribute to the improvement of the SNPG by consolidating stricto sensu academic PPGs classified as "Emerging" and "Developing."
National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq:
CNPq grants scholarships for human resource training in scientific and technological research at universities, research institutes, technology centers, and professional training institutions, both in Brazil and abroad.
In addition to fostering human resource training in strategic areas for national development, CNPq provides financial resources for implementing research and development (R&D) projects, programs, and networks, either directly or in partnership with state governments.
CNPq also invests in scientific and technological dissemination by supporting publishing and editorial initiatives, funding scientific events, and enabling students and researchers to participate in major national and international science and technology conferences and events.
CNPq offers various scholarship and research funding modalities for high school, undergraduate, postgraduate students, recent Ph.D. graduates, and experienced researchers both in Brazil and abroad. Scholarships are granted directly by CNPq or by educational and research institutions to which CNPq allocates scholarship quotas.
Postgraduate Asymmetry Reduction Program (PRAPG):
This program aims to enhance the National Postgraduate System (SNPG) by reducing quality asymmetries in postgraduate education. It does so by fostering the training of highly qualified human resources, improving the qualifications of higher education institution faculty, enhancing the academic-scientific infrastructure of postgraduate education, and leveraging the identified strengths and potential of stricto sensu academic PPGs that received a score of 3 in the last three CAPES evaluation cycles (2013–2017–2021).
Scholarship Duration
The scholarship will be granted for a maximum period of twelve months, renewable annually up to a limit of 48 (forty-eight) months for doctoral studies and 24 (twenty-four) months for master's studies.
Scholarship Stipends:
- Master's degree: R$ 2,100.00
- Doctorate degree: R$ 3,100.00
Scholarship Nomination:
The nomination of a new CAPES/FAPEMIG/CNPq scholarship holder occurs due to an available scholarship quota, whether due to thesis/dissertation defense, withdrawal from the course, or discontinuation of the scholarship.
Scholarship Distribution:
Refer to CHAPTER II - REQUIREMENTS FOR INITIAL SCHOLARSHIP GRANTING in RESOLUTION COLPPGCS No. 6, OF DECEMBER 11, 2024, which establishes guidelines for awarding, monitoring, and renewing master's and doctoral scholarships within the Postgraduate Program in Social Sciences at the Federal University of Uberlândia and regulates the accumulation of CAPES scholarships with remunerated activities or other income sources.
Scholarship Allocation in the Postgraduate Program in Social Sciences (PPGCS) in 2024:
- CAPES/DS: 5 scholarships
- FAPEMIG: 2 scholarships
- CNPq: 2 scholarships
- CAPES/PDPG: 1 scholarship
The appointment of a new CAPES / FAPEMIG scholarship holder occurs due to an unused scholarship quota, whether due to dissertation defense, withdrawal from the course or scholarship.
DS - CAPES scholarship requirement:
I – dedicate myself fully to the activities of the Postgraduate Program;
II – when they have an employment relationship, are released from professional activities and do not receive any salary;
III – prove satisfactory academic performance, in accordance with the standards defined by the institution promoting the course;
IV – not have any working relationship with the institution promoting the Postgraduate Program;
V – undertake a teaching internship in accordance with the provisions of art. 18 of the current regulation;
VI – not be a student in a medical residency program;
VII – be classified in the selection process specially established by the Higher Education Institution where the course is taken;
VIII - do not accumulate the scholarship with any type of aid or scholarship from another CAPES program, from another public, national or international funding agency, or public or private company, except in the situations of paragraphs a, b and c of item XI, of art. 9th of the current regulation.
IX - assume the obligation to reimburse the amounts spent on the scholarship, in the event of interruption of the study, unless motivated by unforeseeable circumstances, force majeure, circumstances beyond one's control or duly proven serious illness.
PAPG - FAPEMIG scholarship requirement:
a) Be regularly enrolled in the Postgraduate Program
b) Be domiciled in the State of Minas Gerais
c) Do not accumulate scholarship
d) Be in accordance with Deliberation 84 of the FAPEMIG Board of Trustees, of August 11, 2015.
e) Not have an employment relationship.
Grant distribution:
Academic Master's scholarships in Social Sciences are distributed among candidates approved in the selection process, according to criteria established by the Board of the Postgraduate Program in Social Sciences.
Quantities of scholarships allocated to the Postgraduate Program in Social Sciences (PPGCS):
In 2024, PPGCS has the following number of scholarships allocated for students:
DS/CAPES: 3 scholarships;
PAPG/FAPEMIG: 2 scholarships;
PDPG/CAPES: 0 scholarships.
REQUISITO:
Be enrolled as a regular student in the Postgraduate Program.
